MY EXPERIENCES WITH KRAV MAGA

A few weeks ago, I was invited by DefenseMonkees to come follow a trial lesson of Krav Maga. Krav what? Krav Maga. I must honestly say I had never heard of it before. After doing some research, I became very curious and last Monday my trial lesson was scheduled. In this article, I will share what Krav Maga is, why I was so interested, and what I thought of it.
What is Krav Maga?
Until a few weeks ago, I had never heard of it. Before I would schedule my first trial lesson, I wanted to know what to expect. On the website of DefenseMonkees, I read a bit more about what it actually is.
‘Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli army. The techniques are continuously tested and adapted in conflict areas. Because of this, Krav Maga is by far the most advanced self-defense system in the world. During the lessons, you learn to protect yourself and others in the most effective and efficient way in tight situations.’
Moreover, it is for everyone. Young, old, fat, thin, fit, unhealthy; it doesn't matter. Everyone can participate in Krav Maga. This already reassures me somewhat. After reading, I am indeed quite afraid that this will be super intense for me. I have good fitness but little strength. Especially in my arms, I am not very strong. I was curious about how I would manage in a trial lesson.
Why Krav Maga?
You might be wondering what Krav Maga has to do with my blog. Normally, I write about running or cycling. Of course, I am always up for a fun challenge outside my comfort zone. And this is definitely that! Still, I did it for another reason.
Earlier, I wrote on my blog about the harassment I experienced while running. Unfortunately, this is something that occurs far too often. Not only women, but also men can sometimes be approached in an unpleasant manner on the street or during sports. Since that incident, I have often felt unsafe while exercising. What could I have done in such a situation? How should I act in a tight situation? Or how do I ensure that I have a confident posture?
All these aspects are addressed during Krav Maga. During lessons, you learn not only what to do in such a situation but it also ensures that you become more confident. You know exactly how to defend yourself if needed. Finally, it is also an immense boost for your fitness and you can become very fit in a short time.
My experiences
Last Monday, I had my trial lesson of Krav Maga. Beforehand, I found it quite exciting. How tough would it be? My arm muscles are never used, and I have never done martial arts before. Fortunately, there were several other beginners or a few who were also coming for a trial lesson. That reassured me.
The majority of the participants in this lesson are men, but there were also a few women present. The distribution is usually 68% men and 32% women. Some men were very experienced and immediately showed some techniques. After a warm-up, in which we already tried some small defenses, we start with the core of the lesson. The group is divided into two. The most experienced people can perform some more technical assignments. In the beginners' group, the basics are explained. We practice a kick technique, defend ourselves, and what we should do if someone were to grab us by the throat. We also practice in various situations what you could do if someone approaches you. We even practice shouting and raising our voices.
Step by step, the techniques are explained and practiced. I quickly notice how intensive it is. I am sweating like crazy! I can also feel my arm muscles burning. I can really imagine that this is an enormous boost for your fitness. I still feel those thirty push-ups at the end in my arms.
After nearly an hour and a half, my first lesson of Krav Maga is up. I have learned so much! I never expected it would be this intense. I found the different techniques quite hard to remember, but I firmly believe they can become second nature. By repeating and practicing often, you know exactly how to act in a tight situation. Besides the fact that I find it very fun and educational, it is certainly also a good workout.
I would definitely recommend a Krav Maga lesson if you want to learn more about self-defense, get fitter, or become more confident! Everyone can participate, and all techniques are well explained. Through DefenseMonkees, you can book three trial lessons! Definitely worth the effort to try it out.
Have you heard of Krav Maga before? Does it seem like something you would want to try? Why or why not? I'm curious!
