Krav Maga Stick Defense

Why it is dangerous

A stick, club or baseball bat can deliver enormous force at high speed. A single clean hit to the head can be fatal, which makes this threat extremely serious.

Krav Maga no nonsense to the rescue

Krav Maga does not pretend that unarmed stick defense is safe. It simply gives you practical tools to survive when you have no other choice.

How the defense works

When someone swings a stick at you, the danger comes from the long arc of the swing. The tip of the stick travels the fastest, which means staying at long range is the worst possible place to be. In real self defense you have two realistic options. You either run and escape, or you close the distance and enter the attacker’s space before the strike reaches full power.

The moment you decide to go in, you need commitment. Bring your forearm up to protect your head like a shield and drive forward. Your chin drops behind your shoulder, one arm builds a wall in front of your face, and the other arm shoots out toward the attacker’s bicep or shoulder. This makes you a smaller target and gets you inside the dangerous part of the swing.

As soon as you make contact, you rotate your shoulders, lift your hand to control the attacking arm, and strike aggressively. Common follow-ups include an elbow to the head, a palm strike, a knee to the groin or a knee to the face. The goal is to overwhelm the attacker and break their balance so the stick becomes easier to take.

Once the attacker is stunned, you slide your control hand down, lift your pinky side up, and strip the stick out of their grip. Now you can choose to disengage or use the stick yourself if the situation is still threatening. The same principle applies whether the attacker swings with one hand or two hands. You protect, burst in, control the arm, strike hard, and finish safely.

Krav Maga never sugarcoats this. A stick attack is chaotic, violent and fast. The technique is designed to give you the best chance of surviving a situation that is already dangerous from the start.
